Position Specifics for an Ideal Candidate:
The Research Assistant is an integral part of the LiT.RL Lab Research Team and will liaise with all research project team members through various project phases. Working collaboratively, the incumbent will support the development of future projects, implement current projects, and analyze and disseminate completed projects. The current project on identification of misinformation is described on the lab’s page. Here is also the associated research articles. Does this research make sense to you? Responsibilities:
Collect and process large amounts of textual data for a range of binary text classification tasks (for instance, clickbait identification or fake new modeling).
Apply machine learning techniques to develop models of legitimate news as compared to viral digital deception.
Write natural language processing scripts for text analysis.
Provide user interfaces for text analytical tools that integrate NLP scripts.
Support UI development for study participant data collection with the existing JavaScript-based tools (with Python components in the pipeline).

Qualifications:
Graduate student (at Western) in a program of study with a significant computational component; Computer Science, Library and Information Science, and Computational Linguistics specializations preferred.

Experience:
Programming/computational expertise
Familiarity with natural language processing techniques
Knowledge of machine learning techniques
Knowledge of Python preferred
Research experience desirable
Familiarity with fake news and current journalistic practices
Willingness to learn about the deception detection research
Strong independent thinking abilities
Strong interpersonal skills Strong technical writing skills
Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment
