Guest Talk “The Power of Controlled Vocabularies in Information Access” by Erin Bourgard

On Thursday, March 27 @1:30 Erin Bourgard will present her guest talk “The Power of Controlled Vocabularies in Information Access” to the graduate students in Dr. Rubin’s Winter 2025 course on Thesaurus Construction & Metadata (LIS9202). In her talk, Erin will elaborate on the continued importance of controlled vocabularies in information retrieval and the process for maintaining them (using LCSH as the main example). She will offer a discussion within an EDI-D framework using examples from LCSH’s tentative lists. The talk will advocate for the inclusion of diverse and specialized vocabularies/thesauri within library records.

Brief Biography: Erin Bourgard is a data and information professional who graduated from FIMS MLIS program in 2012. Currently Acting Director at FIMS Graduate Library, much of her librarian experience is in organizing and managing metadata for the accessibility and discoverability of library resources. Erin’s website: http://erinjohnson.ca/
