On 24 March 2023, the first term MLIS students in Dr. Rubin’s LIS9002 course at FIMS are invited to participate in a special event at the Archives and Special Collections (ARC), Western Libraries. Their ARC Tour and Introduction to Archival Work starts at 10 a.m. in Weldon Room #120. The tour and lecture will be held by Archivists, Amanda Jamieson and Lisa Lawlis, from the Archives and Special Collections (ASC team) at Western Libraries, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. Their contribution to the professional development of the future librarians or information professionals is much appreciated!
“Archivists are responsible for all aspects of archival practice including: acquisition and appraisal, arrangement and description, preservation, reference service and research consultations, instruction and outreach” (as described in the “About Archives and Special Collections” page, accessed on 02/23/2023).
All LIS9002 students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the history of the Western Libraries, its holdings, its system of eight locations, as well as notable librarians and collections. A good starting point for basic facts are on our institutional websites, dedicated Wikipedia page, and its associated resources.
For example, according to the “About Archives and Special Collections” page, Western archives includes “all fonds and collections, including both university and private records, but not rare books, local history monographs, and maps” including “Special Collections. Current areas of strength for archival records include: Arts and Built Heritage; Business; Health, Medicine, and Science; Local History; Photographic Collections; and University Archives.”
The facilitator for this tour event is Sodiq Onaolapo, Dr. Rubin’s TA for this course in Winter 2023. This event is available to registered students in the class only. For all questions about the event, please email the Prof or the TA.
