I’m coming back to teaching after a year of sabbatical. My 2021/22 leave was spent writing a book “Misinformation and Disinformation: Detecting Fakes with the Eye and AI” (to be completed by 2022) under a contract with the Springer Nature Publisher (details here). In 2021/22 I hope to see our FIMS students face-to-face, assuming Western health guidelines and Ontario COVID-19 regulations allow us to proceed with in-class learning.

I will see you in Fall 2021, if you are enrolled in either of these two graduate courses:
INFORMATION ORGANIZATION, CURATION AND ACCESS (LIS9002), or
MULTILINGUAL INFORMATION ACCESS (LIS 9733/9843).

My Winter 2022 scheduled courses are:
THESAURUS CONSTRUCTION AND METADATA (LIS9202), and
MISINFORMATION & VIRAL DECEPTION (FIMS 9328 Special Topic).

Each class has an electronic component primarily to organize the course materials, scheduling, readings, and assignment submissions.

For now, I plan an in-person delivery of lectures, as per Western recommendations for the upcoming academic year. Most classes have an interactive component such as hands-on exercises, work in pairs or small group settings. Those interactions are ideally accomplished in person but we will have to act in accordance with the epidemiological situation of the day, when the time comes. Let’s not fool ourselves that we know what will happen for sure but also let’s hope for the best.
I advocate preparedness, flexibility, and calm in the face of uncertainty.
